India, China to jointly launch first-ever high-speed internet network in China

DELHI — China is expected to join India in the world’s first ever high-tech internet network, in a sign of growing cooperation in the global race to digitize the economy.

The announcement came Tuesday from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Information Technology, which announced the collaboration between the two countries to develop a broadband network.

The collaboration is expected, in addition to the one already under way between China and the European Union, and will help China connect more than a billion people with high-definition television, telecommunication and the Internet.

China’s top telecommunications regulator said in May that it would build a high-quality broadband network that would reach as many as 10 million people.
